Hope Restored Through Practical Support

When Lucy first came to Māngere Budgeting Services Trust, she felt completely overwhelmed by debt and unable to keep up with her repayments. She was worried she would not have enough money for her next payment and felt she could no longer provide adequately for her family.

At that point, Lucy believed withdrawing her KiwiSaver was her only option. She felt stuck, stressed, and uncertain about her financial future

Financial Mentor Noel with client Lucy

Noel, one of our Financial Mentors, worked alongside Lucy to unpack her financial situation step by step. Together, they reviewed her family’s bank statements and spending patterns.

It quickly became clear that the household was spending around $150 per week on takeaways, in addition to their regular grocery shop. Much of this spending was on takeaways, coffees and small treats for the children.

As Lucy gained insight into where her money was going, she began to understand how these small, frequent expenses were adding up.

Using cooking books and recipes available through the Tātou Social Supermarket, Lucy and Noel worked together to create simple, nutritious, realistic meal plans that her family would enjoy.

Preparing meals and treats with the kids at home

Lucy faced a clear shift in mindset. She now understands how takeaway purchases impact her weekly budget and feels more confident in managing her spending.

By planning meals, preparing food at home, and learning how to make affordable treats for her children, Lucy was able to stretch her money further almost immediately.

She now enjoys cooking with her kids and sees it as a positive, fun part of family life rather than a burden.

Support included use of our Tatou Social Supermarket

Most importantly, Lucy regained a sense of control and hope. With practical tools and new confidence, she no longer sees KiwiSaver withdrawal as an option and feels empowered to work toward a more secure financial future.
